Teachers of ICT Face Job Loss...And Big Opportunities!

ICT is being replaced by Computer Science. There is no doubt that from September 2014, there will be an expected requirement for schools to teach Computer Science. It might be that ICT will come back, though this is a gamble you take. I guess it will not. I've always been an advocate (though a somewhat quiet one) for embedding ICT into the curriculum. Previous attempts have failed, though since then, technology and teacher expertise has rapidly moved on, thereby making it evermore plausible.

In my view, an effective school will look to:

  1. Embed ICT into the curriculum by appointing IT experts where appropriate - facilitating progress & improving engagement
    1. e.g. Using electronic data loggers to make science more engaging and efficient in recording.
    2. e.g. Using creative artistic drawing packages as part of the art curriculum to make it more engaging
    3. e.g. Using specialist software for the given subject, e.g. ProTools in Music technology, SketchUp in design lessons etc.
  2. Look to see if ICT teachers are qualified (on paper or by experience) to teach Computer Science
  3. Train and encourage ICT teachers to teach Computer Science
  4. Give staff the resources and responsibility allowances to develop a Computer Science curriculum
  5. Make redundant staff for where a job no-longer exists. It's a sad, hard fact.

There are big opportunities open to present teachers. Many schools still appear oblivious about the changes, and therefore; now is a good time to be proactive in suggesting the above, and also self-study in Computer Science. Be under no illusion that Computer Science is different to what we traditionally know as ICT.

I've spent time looking at the Computer Science curriculum and presently actively considering ways about how this can be best delivered. The good news is that there should be ample time in KS3 to teach both Computer Science and still allow for some of the fun creative ICT content. I will without doubt be allocating time to developing a curriculum.

It is likely that if you are proactive, and prepared, then you put yourself in prime position for jobs in the coming two years.

Some will see the replacement of ICT with Computer Science as a big threat and as a result of this, they will be defensive, worry and then be in a last-minute rush to get everything organised for September 2014. For you, it is an opportunity to be ahead of the game – if you choose to act now!
